Learning

Torah study is of central importance to any Jewish community and BES is no exception. At BES, we believe that every Jew has the right and responsibility to study Torah. While the role of trained Torah scholars as teachers must not be underestimated, we also believe that every student of Torah brings their own unique perspective to the process. This is reflected in the style of much of the classes and courses we offer. They tend to be text and discussion based, so as to encourage and empower the student to engage directly with the material.

We also believe in the type of Torah study that does not promise answers to everything. One of the great characteristics of the Talmud is its readiness to live with unanswered questions. A serious student of Torah knows his own limitations. He also knows that there is as much pleasure to be had in discovering a question as there is in finding the answer.

Last but not least, we believe in the importance of Torah study for women. At BES, women participate in and teach a full range of Torah subjects ranging from Talmud and Jewish Law to Bible and Philosophy.
